  • Sharon AI has held talks over a stake of about 4.9% in ASX-listed Frontier Energy, The Australian reports, though Sharon AI says it has not bought one.

  • Frontier's Waroona solar-battery project has credit-approved debt of up to A$280 million against a first-stage cost of about A$327 million.

  • Waroona targets first generation in the second half of 2028, more than a year after Sharon AI expects 62,000 NVIDIA GPUs to be running.

  • Firmus, AirTrunk and Anthropic have all gone to Australian power projects for supply contracts; none has taken a stake in one.

  • Sharon AI hired a Macquarie chief financial officer and a Spark New Zealand legal chief this week, ahead of an ASX listing reported for next month.

A solar stake and two hires land weeks before the ASX debut

The Australian reported talks over a stake in a Western Australian solar developer on 20 July 2026, and over the following three days Sharon AI filled its chief financial officer and chief legal officer roles from Macquarie and Spark New Zealand. Sharon AI rents space in other companies' data centres and owns no generation, and it is preparing to list in Australia as early as next month. It has confirmed no transaction with Frontier Energy.

Sharon AI held talks over a 4.9% Frontier Energy stake, The Australian reports

Sharon AI has been in talks to buy a stake in ASX-listed Frontier Energy, The Australian's DataRoom column reported on 20 July 2026. Columnist Bridget Carter put the discussions at around 4.9%, and wrote that it is unclear whether they are still live. Frontier sources told the paper that data centre operators approach the company regularly.

Frontier's market value was about A$121 million before its July placement shares were quoted, a contained entry point for a company valued above US$2 billion on the Nasdaq. Sharon AI told DataRoom it continually assesses partnerships with renewable energy projects where co-location could improve efficiency and accelerate deployment. A wire summary carried by S&P Capital IQ records Sharon AI as saying it has not bought a 4.9% stake.

Frontier lines up A$280 million of debt for Waroona, first power targeted for 2028

Waroona pairs a 132MW solar farm with an 81.5MW battery on freehold land about 120km south of Perth, at a first-stage cost of about A$327 million. Natixis and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation gave credit-approved commitments for up to A$280 million of debt on 17 July 2026, which Frontier described as completing the funding package. A A$110 million placement at A$0.20 came in June, and revenue carries a floor to 2042 under the Australian government's Capacity Investment Scheme. Frontier's disclosure puts the site 500 metres from the Landwehr terminal, which connects it via 330kV transmission into Western Australia's main grid.

Frontier appointed Monford as engineering, procurement and construction contractor on 20 July 2026, with mobilisation in September 2026 and first generation targeted for the second half of 2028. First power is not due until more than a year after Sharon AI expects to have more than 62,000 NVIDIA GPUs running, and Waroona's four later stages would reach around 1,000MW of solar by 2031. The project also joins a connection queue AEMO puts at 5.4GW of data centre demand.

Australia's AI operators have so far bought power under contract, not project equity

Other compute buyers have gone to Australian energy projects for electricity, and every disclosed deal so far has been a supply contract. Firmus took a long-term offtake over GreenPoint Energy's 200MW Koolunga battery to firm its South Australian AI factories. AirTrunk buys output from the Mulwala solar farm and applies it to Google's Australian load. Anthropic has been reported in talks with SunCable over Northern Territory solar, which neither party has confirmed. A stake in Frontier would buy a share of Waroona's returns instead of its output.

116MW of Sharon AI's 132MW is contracted, all of it in leased data centres

Sharon AI sits in the neocloud tier, leasing capacity from operators, and is anchored at a 50MW footprint at NEXTDC's M3 in Melbourne. Its disclosure of 16 July 2026 puts total AI factory capacity at 132MW, of which 116MW is contracted to end customers, with more than 62,000 NVIDIA GPUs expected by mid-2027. Under its six-year NVIDIA collaboration, the two are working to enable 72MW of that in Australia, with NEXTDC the landlord for most of it. Grid connection and firm supply are the landlord's problem under that arrangement.

The Australian reports the Australian government's view that a data centre seeking to connect must bring its own energy solution, a stance that sits alongside the five national expectations for data centres set in March 2026.

Macquarie's Anuj Goel becomes chief financial officer from 24 August

Sharon AI appointed Anuj Goel as chief financial officer from 24 August 2026, a 20-year Macquarie executive most recently head of technology for Asia-Pacific at Macquarie Capital. He replaces Tim Broadfoot, whom the AFR credits with steering the company through its Nasdaq listing. A day later Sharon AI named Melissa Anastasiou chief legal officer, after more than 16 years at Spark New Zealand, latterly as executive group general counsel.

Both join a leadership group rebuilt this year. Co-founder James Manning became chief executive on 22 January 2026, and former Telstra chief executive Andrew Penn AO took the chair on 21 May 2026. The listing itself is described differently by the two mastheads: The Australian reports an admission on a compliance basis next month, which raises no new capital, while the AFR reports Canaccord Genuity and Macquarie working on a float it estimates at around A$600 million. No prospectus is public.

What to watch

Frontier's disclosures are the first place a transaction would surface, as a placement, a strategic agreement or a company statement. Sharon AI's listing documents should show where its 132MW will sit and on whose power, including the site for the US$1.32 billion New Zealand contract. Waroona mobilises in September 2026, and Goel starts on 24 August 2026.
