Google, Apple, Meta, Amazon and Microsoft were named as Australian prospects on 7 September, by an AirTrunk executive speaking to Bloomberg. Australian operators disclose contracted megawatts but rarely name the customer behind them, so a named list is unusual.
Sabooh Whitelaw, AirTrunk's associate vice president for energy and utilities, said the company has seen stronger-than-expected interest in Australia over the past six to eight months from companies including those five. "Australia has political stability, access to renewable power, available land" and is close to major population centres in Asia, she told Bloomberg, and "the demand is expected to translate into firm commitments and investment in the coming months and years."
Amazon, Microsoft, Google and Apple run Australian cloud regions, own Australian sites or contract Australian energy today, and Meta's nearest data centre is in Singapore. A commitment from any of them would extend a footprint that already exists here, and it would appear first in an operator's contracted megawatts.
Whitelaw closed on grid connections and approvals
Whitelaw closed on supply, saying delays in grid connections and approvals risk pushing Australian projects back as demand outpaces construction. Bloomberg's Keira Wright reported the interview on 7 September 2026, describing interest from companies "including" those five.
Bloomberg set her four reasons against conditions in established American markets, where it reports worries about grid and water use temporarily halting projects from New York to Seattle. Against that, Commonwealth Bank estimates the Australian sector could attract A$150 billion of investment by 2030.

Amazon's A$20 billion covers expanding, operating and maintaining its data centre infrastructure in Australia from 2025 to 2029. Microsoft's A$25 billion is capital and operating expenditure to expand its Azure AI infrastructure across Australia by the end of the same year, announced alongside separate commitments on cyber defence and skills. Microsoft leases as well as builds, and its two Canberra Azure regions have run from Canberra Data Centres facilities since April 2018, which is how hyperscalers in Australia commonly take capacity.
Google runs two Australian cloud regions, and its stated Australian figure is the A$1 billion Digital Future Initiative of November 2021, a five-year commitment to infrastructure, research and partnerships. Google, AirTrunk and European Energy Australia announced the 25MW Mulwala solar farm in the New South Wales Riverina on 1 June 2026, with AirTrunk procuring the output for Google's Australian electricity use. A larger Australian proposal was reported in March 2026, on Australian Financial Review reporting, as paused over how the investment would be taxed.
Meta builds and owns its data centres, and its published locations list runs to sites in the United States, Denmark, Ireland, Sweden, Canada and Singapore, which is its Asia Pacific campus. Apple's iCloud documentation, updated 12 January 2026, says both Apple and third-party data centres may be used to store and process customer data. Apple's Australian commitment on the public record is generation: the 80MW Lancaster solar farm with European Energy, part of a portfolio Apple says will generate more than one million megawatt hours of clean electricity a year in Australia before 2030.
Nine gigawatts of projects sit in the grid connection queue
The Australian Energy Market Operator counted 17 data centre projects and 9GW of maximum connection capacity in the National Electricity Market in the June quarter, and twelve of those projects, carrying 7.6GW, were at the application stage.
That queue lists the operators building the capacity, not the tenants who will take it, because hyperscale customers rent inside data centres in Australia that somebody else builds. So a commitment from one of the five would show up in an operator's contracted megawatts first, at a facility already in the directory of Australian data centres or on a campus already holding consent. Cushman & Wakefield tracks that measure, and its pre-leasing work counts Australian capacity contracted ahead of completion.
Whitelaw made the anchor-tenant case in July
Whitelaw put the same argument at the Australian Clean Energy Summit in Sydney on 28 July 2026, reported by Energy-Storage.News two days later, casting data centres as anchor tenants for clean energy infrastructure: credible long-term digital demand can bring forward the generation, storage and transmission Australia already needs.
The AEMC advised ministers in July and New South Wales introduced a bill in August
The Australian Energy Market Commission provided its advice to energy ministers on 28 July and published it on 5 August, recommending that data centres surrender renewable certificates from new generators, show their demand is backed by new firm capacity and register as market participants, and that connection agreements encourage them to shift demand and co-locate with generation. Energy minister Chris Bowen lodged two cost recovery rule change requests with the commission on 22 July. New South Wales introduced its Electricity Infrastructure Investment Amendment Bill on 5 August, and on 17 August published both its data centre guidelines and a consultation paper proposing ten connection and cost recovery reforms.
Every reason Whitelaw gave is something Australia already has: political stability, renewable power, available land and proximity to Asia. What is still being set is how long a connection and a consent take, and two decisions on that fall due on 14 September and 29 October.
What to watch
Submissions on the New South Wales consultation paper close on 14 September 2026, with regulations expected in the fourth quarter and a large load access scheme consultation running from late 2026 into the first half of 2027. The commission's final determination on access standards for large loads is due on 29 October 2026.
Announced Australian sites, lodged connection applications and disclosed capacity figures are the next measurable steps for any of Google, Apple, Meta, Amazon or Microsoft.
